The whole skillfully combined to an air-supported element - a tribute to the pilots of the previous millennium was born.
Taking up the tradition of former projects Temme // Obermeier again to build a very well-thought-out designed structure - highly transparent, absolutely UV-stable and very durable.

you can read a detailed report on all the requirements placed on the ETFE large cushion roof for this project.

Technical / General information:

Membrane design: fixed and retractable roofing of PVC-PES membrane
Dimensions / sqm: 810
Architect: Kugel & Rein Architekten
Client: Municipalityx of Lavis, Italy
Membrane Assembly: October 2012

Project

Events on the open air stage in Lavis, a village in the Italian Trentino, have a long tradition forming part of the cultural identity of the community. The dependence of the stage on wind and weather traditionally led to postponement or cancellation of plays and concerts. In order to guarantee secure events not only for the community members but also for the numerous summer visitors, the community decided to cover the stage with a light and translucent as well as partially convertible roof. Considering these requirements, the architects Kugel and the engineering office Rein, Stuttgart developed a combination of a stationary and convertible roof with a total area of ca. 800 m². The stationary roof covers and protects the stage area. The convertible roof which can be opened by means of a supporting structure with traction cables, protects the spectators against wind and rain. The lightness of the PVC/PES membrane elements, whose details were developed together with Temme // Obermeier, allows for an open air feeling whether the roof is closed or open. Both roof areas are connected by a central main steel beam with polycarbonate elements which protect the open roof during winter months. In order to achieve weather independent performances, the “SFH-Verein” (Association for preservation and use of Salzburg Festival Theatres) requested amembrane roof of translucent PVC/PES fabric and transparent ETFE foil which could be retracted automatically in a few minutes. The success of the open-air stage can be attributed to the dedicated team of amateur actors, professional directors, theater professionals and volunteers.
Temme // Obermeier was appointed by the City of Meppen to complete detail design and install this striking "sculpted canopy" that will protect performers and spectators from the elements without distracting from the performance and still preserving the unique characteristics of this open-air stage. The canopy will combine aesthetics and functionality, providing shade against rain and sun while maintaining a clear view of the stage against the backdrop of the forest. The translucent Teflon®DuPont coated glass membrane (also known as PTFE/Glass) is "soft" guaranteeing optimal acoustics.
Textile membrane architecture is one of the most demanding forms of construction. Temme // Obermeier is fast becoming the go-to expert for these "fluid" free form lightweight structures and we listen to what the client wants. These structures require precise detailing and this Teflon®DuPont coated glass fabric material is sculpted perfectly. Another benefit associated with this type of design, is that the amount of material used is kept to a minimum. The canopy is braced with light steel cables that are tied to lightweight steel masts that are fixed to the concrete foundations. This clever textile design also incorporates a simple drainage system that encourages water runoff.
The original stage was carefully dismantled last after the final performance last year and the new canopy will be ready in time for the upcoming summer season, which can now be planned - independent of the weather!

Technical / General information:

Membrane design: PVC-PES
Dimensions/sqm: 1,010
Architect: ASP Architects, Stuttgart
Client: City of St. Goarshausen
Membrane Completion: June 2017

Project

The old open-air stage was victim to the unkind ravages of time! In order to achieve weather independent performances, the “SFH-Verein” (Association for preservation and use of Salzburg Festival Theatres) requested amembrane roof of translucent PVC/PES fabric and transparent ETFE foil which could be retracted automatically in a few minutes. Thus, in any weather, the guests can be offered the unique experience of an open air event, independent from any expensive substitute indoor venue.
Following the requests of the historic society to protect the historical façades of the Old Residence from any damage, Kugel + Rein Architects und Engineers designed a temporary and also retractable structure which stands nearly loose in the patio. By only transferring minimal horizontal loads into a few designated anchors of the old structure the surrounding walls are nearly untouched. For the inner area of the circumferential lattice girder, lying on four columns and having a width of 22 m and a length of 37 m, Temme // Obermeier realized a parallel retractable membrane roof covering 1000 m² out of V-shaped segments. Standing ridge and hanging valley cables support the translucent PVC-PES fabric.
For easy roof operation the driving carriages, cables, belts, fabric details and many more elements had to be precisely developed by the Engineers in collaboration with Temme // Obermeier experts. Considering that this structure has been designed and executed as a prototype all participants have been impressed by the performance when finally moved for the first time.
When open, the membrane roof is parked under a fixed cover roof in front of the east façade.
