The dependence of the stage on wind and weather traditionally led to postponement or cancellation of plays and concerts. In order to guarantee secure events not only for the community members but also for the numerous summer visitors, the community decided to cover the stage with a light and translucent as well as partially convertible roof. Considering these requirements, the architects Kugel and the engineering office Rein, Stuttgart developed a combination of a stationary and convertible roof with a total area of ca. 800 m². The stationary roof covers and protects the stage area. The convertible roof which can be opened by means of a supporting structure with traction cables, protects the spectators against wind and rain. The lightness of the PVC/PES membrane elements, whose details were developed together with Temme // Obermeier, allows for an open air feeling whether the roof is closed or open. Both roof areas are connected by a central main steel beam with polycarbonate elements which protect the open roof during winter months. By adding a new façade to the existing structure, the overall footprint of the building was increased by 1,100sqm; an impressive addition in a city where space is at a premium. Our brief included detailing the ETFE cushion roof and engineering the structural supporting steelwork required to "carry" ETFE cushions spanning over 35 m. We drew on our extensive engineering expertise to calculate the horizontal and lateral loads exerted on the existing structure. The load bearing beams and arch tie supports removed the need for additional supporting columns.
Our installation team consisting of six men were on site for exactly six weeks from start to finish leaving the building watertight for the adjacent trades to take over.
Sustainability was always at the heart of this refurbishment project and the lightweight ETFE roof offers a number of economic and environmental benefits compared to a traditional glazed alternative. For example, by choosing an ETFE roof, we required substantially less supporting structural steelwork. Another clever innovation was the integration of our bespoke solar shading syste. The T // O Flex Shade variable shading system enables the client to manage solar control - ensuring ambient comfort "on demand" all year round. The high specification four layers of ETFE foil helped us achieve a U-value of 1.5 W / (sqm).
The T // O Flex Shade variable shading system enables the client to manage solar control - ensuring ambient comfort "on demand" all year round. In mid-July 2018, the 33-ton steel framework of the pyramid was lifted onto the BP administration building and immediately equipped with four ETFE side surfaces, which in turn consist of 60 triangular ETFE foil cushions.
With this pyramid (called “lighthouse”), the building complex received a unique, transparent and light-flooded atrium roof. The atrium below now has a special spatial experience due to the incident daylight, which not only makes the heart of an architect beat faster.
In future, the membrane dome will be illuminated in colour. The "luminous function" together with the pyramid shape will give the BP building complex special attention in the dark from a distance.

Technical / general information:

Structure: ETFE- foil cushion-roof
Size /sqm: 1.100
Architects: Team V, Rotterdam, NL
Client: Fa. Best of all: order the team of Temme // Obermeier!

A separately planned and built-in steel frame with a weight of more than 45 t (therefore more than 50% of the whole steel structure) in the floor below the roof level allowed the installation of a 2-layer cable support. Still level lower, inclined flying columns were fixed in this cable net. The actual support structure for receiving the ETFE foil cushions was placed thereon. All this was successfully planned and realized by the Temme // Obermeier team together with IF Group.

In addition a circulating gutter decoupled from the roof level was installed. Now only small horizontal forces would affect the existing building of the provincial government of Gelderland.

The building was completed by a sun protection. To ensure this, an IR-reducing ETFE foil was installed by Temme // Obermeier. In order to benefit from these places as long as possible throughout the year, considering Mid-European climatic conditions, it demands a protection against wind and weather. Therefore, the “Deutsche Wollforschungsinstitut” (German wool research institute) at the “Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen” (Rheinish-Westfalian Technical University of Aachen) initiated an architectural project to achieve such a roofing for their new patio.
During the past years, the institute has expanded from a mid size research facility to an acknowledged institute with great prospects for continuing growth. Therefore, the institute demanded further space for research, administration and departments. According to the design of Carpus+Partner Architects a new created L form structure together with the also L form shaped existing building surrounds a square patio. The architects designed a highly translucent lightweight foil roof. Temme Obermeier assisted the development and provided the implementation of this ETFE cushion roof including the supporting steel structure spreads.
